1. From the Earth to the Moon; and, Round the Moon — Jules Verne (1865/1870)
One of the true starting points of space-travel fiction. Verne imagines Americans constructing an enormous cannon to launch explorers toward the Moon, then follows their voyage through space; many of his engineering discussions are remarkably fun to compare with the later space program.

2. The First Men in the Moon — H. G. Wells (1901)
An inventor creates the gravity-defying substance Cavorite and travels with a companion to the Moon. Instead of a dead world, they encounter the subterranean Selenites, making this both a space adventure and one of the earliest serious alien-civilization novels.

3. The War of the Worlds — H. G. Wells (1898)
The foundational alien-invasion novel: technologically superior Martians arrive in England and overwhelm human defenses. Beyond the famous tripods and heat rays, Wells uses the invasion to turn Victorian assumptions about empire and human superiority upside down.

4. Off on a Comet! — Jules Verne (1877)
A comet collides with Earth and carries a group of people away on a fragment of the planet. They experience altered gravity, strange days and a tour through the solar system while trying to figure out whether they can ever return home.

5. A Journey in Other Worlds — John Jacob Astor IV (1894)
Yes—the future Titanic passenger John Jacob Astor wrote science fiction. Set in a technologically transformed future, explorers travel to Jupiter and Saturn, making this a fascinating Victorian vision of interplanetary exploration.

6. The Brick Moon — Edward Everett Hale (1869)
An enormous artificial brick sphere intended as a navigational marker accidentally enters orbit—with people aboard. It is historically important because it contains extraordinarily early fictional treatments of an artificial satellite and inhabited orbital station.

7. Edison's Conquest of Mars — Garrett P. Serviss (1898)
A wild unofficial follow-up to the War of the Worlds tradition in which Thomas Edison leads humanity's counterattack against Mars. Serviss gives his expedition anti-gravity spacecraft, advanced weapons and other concepts that would become staples of later space opera.

8. A Columbus of Space — Garrett P. Serviss (1909)
An eccentric inventor harnesses atomic energy and builds a spacecraft capable of reaching Venus. The explorers encounter an alien world and its inhabitants in a story deliberately written in the adventurous tradition of Jules Verne.

9. Other Worlds — Garrett P. Serviss (1901)
Nonfiction rather than a novel, and one of my strongest recommendations for your collection. Serviss examines Mars, Venus and the other planets and seriously asks what conditions and inhabitants might exist there based on the astronomy of his day.

10. The Sidereal Messenger — Galileo Galilei (1610)
This is genuine exploration—the seventeenth-century equivalent of receiving the first photographs from a spacecraft. Galileo reports his telescopic discovery of lunar mountains, previously invisible stars and four moons orbiting Jupiter, observations that permanently changed humanity's conception of the universe.

Moon, Mars & other worlds

11. The Discovery of a World in the Moone — John Wilkins (1638)
An astonishingly early argument that the Moon may actually be another world—and possibly a habitable one. The seventeenth-century language takes some adjustment, but historically this is one of the great precursors of space exploration literature.

12. Mars and Its Canals — Percival Lowell (1906)
Lowell describes his observations of Mars and argues for the famous Martian "canals." His conclusions were wrong, but the book profoundly influenced popular ideas about Mars and helped create the Mars imagined by generations of science-fiction writers.

13. Is Mars Habitable? — Alfred Russel Wallace (1907)
Darwin's contemporary Wallace takes direct aim at Lowell's inhabited-Mars theory. It is particularly interesting when read immediately after Mars and Its Canals: you essentially get an early scientific debate about extraterrestrial habitability.

14. The Moon: A Popular Treatise — Garrett P. Serviss (1907)
An accessible guided tour of the Moon, covering its size, distance, phases, eclipses and physical features. Its photographs and conversational presentation make it a particularly enjoyable snapshot of lunar science decades before Apollo.

15. The Moon — Thomas Gwyn Elger (1895)
A serious observer's guide to lunar geography, complete with a map and detailed descriptions of craters, maria, ridges and rilles. Reading it today feels almost like studying an explorer's map of an unknown continent before spacecraft finally photographed the terrain close-up.

16. The Moon Hoax — Richard Adams Locke (1835)
The legendary newspaper hoax claiming that astronomer John Herschel had discovered fantastic inhabitants on the Moon. It is a fascinating ancestor of both science fiction and modern media hoaxes, showing just how powerful the public fascination with extraterrestrial life already was in the 1830s.

17. The Moon-Voyage — Jules Verne
A convenient volume containing both From the Earth to the Moon and Round the Moon. If you want a single Gutenberg edition for Verne's complete lunar adventure, this is an excellent choice.

18. All Around the Moon — Jules Verne
The sequel concentrating on Barbican, Nicholl and Michel Ardan's voyage through space. Verne spends considerable time imagining weightlessness, orbital mechanics, lunar observation and what humans might experience during a Moon mission.

19. The Evolution of Worlds — Percival Lowell (1909)
Lowell moves beyond Mars to speculate about how stars, planets and entire planetary systems form and evolve. Much of the science is superseded, but that is exactly what makes it interesting as a historical picture of cosmology before modern astrophysics.

20. Dreams of an Astronomer — Camille Flammarion (1923)
Flammarion combines astronomy, philosophy and imaginative cosmic travel. His narrator mentally journeys from the Moon to Mars and farther into the universe while contemplating extraterrestrial life, time and humanity's tiny place in space.

Great classic astronomy books

21. Astronomy for Amateurs — Camille Flammarion (1904)
One of the most enjoyable old popular-astronomy books. It takes you through constellations, stars, the Sun, planets, comets, Earth, Moon and eclipses while maintaining Flammarion's characteristic sense of cosmic wonder.

22. The Story of the Heavens — Robert S. Ball (1885)
A sweeping Victorian tour of astronomy covering the Sun, Moon, planets, stars and the development of astronomical knowledge. Ball was exceptionally good at translating complicated ideas into stories for ordinary readers.

23. The Story of the Solar System — George F. Chambers
A compact exploration of the Sun, planets, moons and comets that make up our planetary neighborhood. Chambers wrote partly with owners of small telescopes in mind, so it combines explanation with the spirit of personal exploration.

24. Curiosities of the Sky — Garrett P. Serviss (1909)
Serviss tackles star clusters, nebulae, auroras, comets, meteors, Mars, asteroids and other cosmic mysteries. It's less a textbook than a collection of the most fascinating astronomical puzzles known at the beginning of the twentieth century.

25. Astronomy in a Nutshell — Garrett P. Serviss (1912)
Serviss deliberately wrote this for people who wanted astronomy without being buried in mathematics. It explains the fundamental structure and workings of the heavens with an emphasis on understandable visual explanations.

26. Astronomy for Beginners — Hereward Carrington (1925)
A surprisingly broad little primer covering the Sun, planets, Moon, comets, meteors, nebulae, stars, telescopes and even the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Gutenberg added this edition recently, but the underlying 1925 work is listed there as public domain in the USA.

27. Astronomy of To-day — Cecil G. Dolmage (1909)
Written specifically to explain astronomy without technical language. It walks from ancient cosmology through the solar system and into what was then cutting-edge astronomy, making it a good picture of the universe immediately before relativity revolutionized physics.

28. Astronomy: The Science of the Heavenly Bodies — David P. Todd
A substantial overview of astronomical knowledge and its historical development. Todd connects ancient astronomy, planetary science, celestial observation and the major scientists who changed our understanding of the universe.

29. A Text-Book of Astronomy — George C. Comstock
More rigorous than the popular books on this list but still very readable for someone who wants to understand how astronomy was actually practiced. It emphasizes measurement, observation, celestial motion and practical exercises rather than merely describing astronomical objects.

30. Recreations in Astronomy — Henry White Warren (1879)
A Victorian introduction combining astronomical explanation with practical experiments and telescope work. It has an old-fashioned philosophical tone, but its enthusiasm for exploring the universe makes it charming.

31. Astronomy with an Opera-Glass — Garrett P. Serviss (1888)
One of my favorites for historical observing. Serviss shows readers how much of the universe can be explored with nothing more sophisticated than simple binocular-style optics.

32. Pleasures of the Telescope — Garrett P. Serviss
A wonderfully enthusiastic guide to amateur telescopic astronomy. Serviss discusses telescope selection and then guides the reader through celestial sights accessible with relatively modest equipment.

33. Round the Year with the Stars — Garrett P. Serviss (1910)
A seasonal tour of the naked-eye sky. Serviss mixes astronomy, mythology and descriptive writing so you learn the constellations while experiencing the night sky as earlier generations did.

34. A Field Book of the Stars — William Tyler Olcott
Essentially a portable early-twentieth-century constellation guide. Maps and straightforward instructions teach readers how to recognize the major stars and constellations without needing advanced astronomy.

35. Half-Hours with the Telescope — Richard A. Proctor (1873)
A hands-on guide to what owners of small telescopes can actually observe. Proctor covers the telescope itself and then leads readers through constellations, planets, the Sun and Moon.

36. Telescopic Work for Starlight Evenings — William F. Denning
A detailed observing manual covering the Sun, Moon, planets, comets, meteors, stars, nebulae and clusters. Especially interesting because Denning approaches the sky as something readers can actively investigate rather than passively read about.

37. The Telescope — Louis Bell
A history and practical explanation of one of humanity's most important exploration instruments. Bell follows the telescope from early optics and Galileo into increasingly powerful astronomical instruments.

Part history of astronomy and part history of astronomical technology. Lockyer shows how humans progressed from naked-eye observations to increasingly sophisticated instruments capable of probing the physical nature of stars.

39. The Practical Astronomer — Thomas Dick
A nineteenth-century guide to light, optics, telescopes and astronomical instruments. It is technical in places but gives an excellent sense of how people actually explored the heavens before photography and electronic detectors transformed astronomy.

40. The Heavens Above — J. A. Gillet & W. J. Rolfe
Designed as a popular handbook rather than a mathematical textbook. It explains the celestial sphere, apparent stellar motion, astronomical instruments and the basic architecture of the solar system and universe.

41. Great Astronomers — Robert S. Ball
A highly readable history told through the lives of Ptolemy, Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, Galileo, Kepler, Newton, Halley, Herschel and others. If you want the human story behind our discovery of the universe, this is an excellent starting point.

42. A Short History of Astronomy — Arthur Berry (1898)
A more systematic account of astronomy's development from ancient observations to nineteenth-century science. Berry explains not only what astronomers discovered but how successive models of the universe replaced one another.

Forbes traces astronomy from primitive sky watching and astrology through the major developments of modern science. It's a compact history that makes clear how gradually humans learned the actual scale and structure of the universe.

44. A Popular History of Astronomy During the Nineteenth Century — Agnes M. Clerke
A much more substantial history concentrating on the century in which astronomy became modern astrophysics. Clerke covers the expansion of stellar astronomy, improved telescopes and the discoveries that transformed the supposedly fixed heavens into a dynamic universe.

45. Pioneers of Science — Oliver Lodge
Lodge tells the story of Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, Galileo and other scientists who overturned older models of the cosmos. It's particularly good for understanding how revolutionary heliocentrism and modern celestial mechanics actually were.
